Day 2

Our first day on this strange island was a success. We had survived, found food, and a house. I took a shower and ate breakfast. Mai did the same. We just had some left over coconut stew with banana's like cereal. "So what are we doing today Miss. Survivalist?" Mai asked. I grinned. "Well we'll search for broken boat parts and more food to stock the fridge." I replied. That seemed like that was the best way to survive right now anyway. Instead of grabbing our map I grabbed some string. Red string to mark where we've been. "Let's go." I said. Mai shrugged and followed. I marked where we went before. And before long we came across an open plain. Wild cows grazing and roaming around were there. I tired a red string around a tree and pulled Mai down behind a bush. "Shh." I whispered. "Well no Dur." she whispered/yelled back. "Can we just go get some fruit and more coconuts? It's so boring watching these cows." Mai complained. "Fine just can we come back later?" I asked. "Fine whatever." Mai replied. Coming back we went towards this lake of fresh water. "WATER!!!" I cried. I ran up towards the lake and Mai slowly followed. We had fresh water at our tree house from the sink and bathroom but to find a whole lake of fresh water. Amazing! "That's cool I guess" Mai said "It's just water." but her eyes gave away more then she was giving on. With some water reeds near by I showed Mai how to make a basket out of the reeds and she caught on really fast. By the end of our waterside experience we had 4 baskets strong enough to carry fruit and coconuts. First we walked towards the the palm trees that held our sweet coconuts. Walking a little farther this time something golden caught my eye. I walked towards it. "Hey Mai come over here." I said. Mai was looking puzzled like me. We entered the clearing. "WHEAT!" Mai and I both shouted at the same time. "Do you know what this means?!?" I asked. "Aha" Mai raised her finger "No." she said finally. "It means Bread!" I replied. Mai clapped. We gathered in some wheat in one basket. So far we had gathered coconuts and some wheat. We started to head back to the plains. The cows were gone but Mai noticed something about the bush. Bushes. "Berries! Black berries, blue berries, raspberry's!" Mai exclaimed. "Aren't you glad we came back?" I said with a grin as we started to harvest the berries. I looked up from our task. A brown cow was sitting in the middle on the plain. "Look." I pointed out to Mai. I mouthed the word milk to her. She nodded excitedly. We came out behind the bushes slowly. "Don't make any sudden movements. It'll scare the calf away." I told Mai. She nodded again. "It's ok Nutmeg come here." Mai cooned. I looked at her quizzically. "Yeah it's ok Nutmeg we won't hurt you." I cooned also. The calf understood and started walking towards us. "That's it girl." Mai said one last time. Soon Mai and I both had one hand each on nutmeg. She seemed to like us. "Can we bring her home?" I asked Mai. She pretended like this was a hard question and finally said yes. We started to walk balancing our basket's on Nutmeg's back she didn't seem to mind. We stopped to fill our last basket with fruit from the orchard then continued on. When we got back to the tree house a stable right underneath our tree was waiting for Nutmeg. Inside it was a beautiful environment for a cow. Hay, fresh hay was spread out in all corners pail for milk stood in one corner and a shovel for poop stood in another. "Wow." Mai breathed. "Didn't see that coming." I added. We got Nutmeg situated and I milk her a little bit while Mai brought up the coconuts, fruit, berries, and wheat up to the tree house. I went to milk Nutmeg and in no time at all I brought the pail up. Inside the tree house the aroma of cooking berries and fruit hit my nose. Mai had made us a fruit and berry stew. It was just slightly cooked berries and fruit with a little bit of coconut milk. It was delicious. I poured some fresh milk into glasses for our drinks. "A toast" I announced "for another successful day on this island." I raised my glass as I finished. "Toast" Mai said "to our new member of the family." she said and pointed her glass to the window. We finished our food and drink and got ready for bed. I lay in my hammock almost to excited to sleep. My thoughts drifted off imagining what we'd find tomorrow....
